TORONTO, ON April 17, 2012 - The Golden Killer is out now. Three years in the making, the album does not disappoint.
Known best for their dancefloor filling jams, Lioness slow things down with the mournful dirge “They Clip The Wings of Birds” but as Toronto Star’s Ben Rayner points out “the arrangement and the production remain all-engulfingly gigantic.” “They Clip The Wings of Birds” is available as a free, legal download: SOUNDCLOUD.
Lioness, unveiled their theatrical live show this past Friday The 13th at The Legendary Horseshoe Tavern. Vanessa Fischer, veiled at center stage and flanked by skull-faced bikers, declared she was “not afraid of bad omens”, she mingles with black cats and walks under ladders. Red banners sporting the band’s symbol curtain the stage for the sumptuous fire visuals conceived by drummer Jeff Scheven. The sound and collaborative vision of the band commanded everyone on to their feet. Through out the show Fischer’s piercing eyes seem to look from the pyre into the future, while bassist Ronnie Morris backs through the crowd and falls on the floor convulsing.
Lioness were joined throughout the show by Hollie Stevenett on keyboards and vocals, with guest appearances by Amy Bowles (Hollow Earth, Pony Da Look) and Leon Taheny (The Golden Killer Producer, Rituals). You can read all about the debut of their theatrical new show in this Now Magazine 4 star review. Catch Lioness again in Toronto this weekend for the celebration of Record Store Day at Sonic Boom Records‘ Annex location.
The Golden Killer is available in stores this Tuesday. You can pre-order Vinyl and CDs now at the New Romantic Store.
In other news, The Holiday Crowd headed back into the studio this weekend to record a special new 7″ single, to be entitled “Sick Days” b/w “Born Under A Different Sign”. The Crowd are back at Inception Studios with David Hermiston. The single is scheduled for release in late summer.
Alex Roberts and Colin Bowers of The Holiday Crowd set up at Inception Studios.

TORONTO, ON March 27, 2012 – Lioness offer “The Night”, the first single off their debut full-length album The Golden Killer due out April 17 on New Romantic. “The Night” is available now as a free download on Soundcloud.
Crashing drums and Vanessa’s soulful wail conjure the darkness as she howls “Every night your shadows haunt you even from your bed” describing the night terrors that inspired “The Night”.
Night terrors or “Hag Syndrome” has been called many things over the centuries, but every culture has a similar interpretation of the paralyzing fear that comes in the night. Vanessa described the experience as “cold bones grasping and digging into my torso while being unable to move or scream.”

April 13 Toronto, ON – Horseshoe Tavern (RELEASE SHOW)
TORONTO, ON – March 7, 2012 Known for their dark dance floor fillers, Lioness broaden the spectrum and release their debut full-length album, The Golden Killer, on New Romantic this April 17, 2012. Produced by Leon Taheny (Owen Pallett, Holy Fuck), the 12 tracks shift between ecstatic dance and heavy rock moods, capturing the Lioness sound and vision: heavy jams you can dance to, draped in mystery and magic; Daft Punk meets Black Sabbath.
During the writing of The Golden Killer the band experienced the loss of two dear friends, Devon Clifford of Vancouver’s You Say Party and Toronto art provocateur Will Munro. Their sudden passing had a profound effect on the band – shaping the album – and exploring themes of loss and a re-evaluation of life. The album closer is the mournful “Stay Awhile”, which stands as an homage to both Devon and Will.
Formed in 2007 by bassist Ronnie Morris and drummer Jeff Scheven (former rhythm section for controller.controller) and vocalist Vanessa Fischer (ex-No Dynamics), Lioness released its self-titled debut EP in 2008, followed by Omens, Oracles and Signs Volumes 1 and 2, featuring remixes by Pilotpriest, Mansion, vitaminsforyou, Kids On TV and others. They toured across Canada and abroad with acts as diverse as You Say Party, k-os and The Cult.
Lioness chose Friday (April) the 13th – a fitting day to pull us under their spell with their ferocious live show – to celebrate the release of The Golden Killer at The Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto.
TORONTO, ON – January 24, 2012 The Holiday Crowd unleash their moody video for “Pennies Found” from their debut record Over The Bluffs, which was released today on New Romantic.
The video, directed by visual artist Matthew Sitler, was filmed entirely on his iPhone using the 8mm App. “Something about the shadows that evening ignited my visual sense. To me, the video is a hymn to the night and all its shaded possibilities.”
Toronto, ON, January 9, 2012 – Toronto-based band The Holiday Crowd are proud to announce the release of their debut, seven-song mini-album, Over The Bluffs coming out on New Romantic (Lioness, Hidden Cameras) on January 24, 2012.
Self described as minimal and stripped-down, The Holiday Crowd’s sound and lyrics arise from all manner of experience: summer afternoon camaraderie, introspective reveries and a few shapely ‘inspirations’ along the way. Click hereto listen to a free download of the lead track “Never Speak Of It Again” on SoundCloud.
The album title Over The Bluffs comes from a lyric in their song “Tiresome”, “I would have led you away from the alliance and over The Bluffs instead”, but in many ways it is an open love letter to Scarborough, Ontario, a notorious suburb of Toronto where lead singer Imran Haniff and guitar player Colin Bowers grew up. “The whole mood of the record has a Scarborough vibe to it and it only seemed fitting to name it with an honorary nod to our old stomping grounds. Scarborough has so much stacked against it; it almost seemed like The Holiday Crowd needed to stick up for it. There’s more material lyrically to write about a place that’s tangible and misunderstood than writing about Narnia or Mordor,” says Haniff.
The Holiday Crowd was formed in 2010 when Hannif and Bowers were joined by old friend Dave Barnes on drums and newcomer and UK transplant Alex Roberts on bass.
Over The Bluffs was recorded and mixed at Inception Studios Toronto by David Hermiston, with the exception of “Never Speak Of It Again” and “Tiresome” which were mixed by Alex Bonenfant.
The Holiday Crowd are set to play a special album release party on Friday January 27 at Oz Studios, 134 Ossington Avenue, Toronto.
